Pittsburgh's Strip District occupies about one half of one square mile including the area from 11th Street to 33rd Street along the route of Smallman Street, Penn Avenue and Liberty Avenue. In the 1800s the Strip District was home to many workshops and factories which used the nearby Allegheny River to transport materials and goods. The area was home to the operations of Heinz, Westinghouse, US Steel and ALCOA.

Today Pittsburgh's historic and practical Strip District is a great place for locals and visitors to find a variety of ethnic food shops, art studios, antique dealers and boutiques. The Strip District is especially active on weekends during the summer time when one can visit vendors, an outdoor farmer's market and sidewalk cafes.
